In Search of Michael Scott
By Renn Vara
A few months ago I caught an interview with actor/comedian Steve Carell talking about his character on the The Office. The interviewer asked Steve if most businesses have a person like Michael Scott. Steve answered, “If you can’t find a Michael Scott in your office, then you’re Michael Scott.” I’ve been haunted by that comment ever since.
As the co-owner of my own company, I’ve reluctantly concluded that I’m the resident Michael Scott in our office, without the humor of course. Why? Because I can’t find him. I also have to admit after deeper reflection that I am the one who comes the closest to the character with my stupid philosophies, crazy ideas, self delusional chatter, and general annoying behavior. There, I’ve said it. Once accepting that reality, I can now deal with adjusting my personality as needed. Whew.
Now what does this have to do with this blog? Well, one of the unspoken concerns business leaders have with adopting social media and blogs (podcasts, vidcasts, webcasts) is they often expose their true personality and character, their inner Michael Scott if you will. It’s a particularly vulnerable place for those leaders who’ve been protected by “handlers” and support staff.
I get it. The new world of business is increasingly demanding touchable leaders. Those who speak for themselves, direct their own image, and analogically roll up their sleeves and work side by side with their employees. Embracing communication tools that expose personal and/or business deficiencies is not easy.
But just like admitting my flaws, once done good leaders can move on to doing what they do best; fixing things, getting it done, and making their business successful. And besides, just like viewers of The Office, everyone around me already knows the “real” me - you too. Another great truth and important to realize if you plan on building strong relationships in your business.
So if you’re struggling with blogging or communicating directly with your employees, customers, investors, and/or partners, get over it. Great business leaders don’t hide, they embrace and co-op successful tools and trends. And there is no better time than now with all the great opportunities to communicate. So get to it my fellow Michael Scott’s and enjoy the process.

Thanks for the reminding us that social media requires, much like the beloved characters in the “Wizard of Oz,” a heart, brains and courage. Your comments here speak to the courage and heart part. Blogs provide an amazing channel with which leaders can communicate and build relationships. Of course, proper training and tools (the brains part) are what gives strategic value to these communications. I’m thrilled to see that your team gives strong importance to all three key element: tools, content and relationship properties of social media. Here’s to the growing understanding and use of heart, brains and courage in social media!
Hi Renn,
